How to install Backtrack 5 using UNetbootin USB Installer

UNetbootin USB Installer
This installation mode creates bootable USB flash drives and bootable USB Hard Disk Drives; it is a Live USB creator.

  • Cross-platform (available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X)
  • Non-destructive install (does not format the device) using Syslinux.
  • Supports mainstream Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, FedoraopenSUSECentOSDebian, Gentoo, Linux MintArch Linux,MandrivaMEPISSlackware as well as FreeDOSFreeBSD and NetBSD.
  • Can load a variety of system utilities, such as Ophcrack, BackTrack.
  • Other operating systems can be loaded via pre-downloaded ISO image or floppy/hard drive disk image files.
  • Automatically detects all removable devices.
  • Supports LiveUSB persistence (preserving files across reboots; this feature is for Ubuntu only)Multiple installs on the same device are not supported.
This method of getting a live install to a USB drive is the simplest available using Unetbootin. Note that we will format the USB drive and erase its contents

Required Tools and Preparation

 

1.USB Thumbdrive (Minimum USB Drive capacity 4 GB)

2.Backtrack 5 ISO file, md5sum verified.        BackTrack Download

3.UNetbootin - A tool to transfer an iso image to a USB drive   Download UNetbootin 

 Note: you can now save changes made to the system across reboots (persistence).


  • Plug in your USB Drive
  • Format the USB drive to FAT32
  • Start Unetbootin and select the "diskimage" option, choose a BackTrack 5 ISO file.  
  • Select the amount of space to use for persistence in MB
  • Select your USB drive and click “OK” for creating a bootable BackTrack USB drive.
  • Once rebooted, remember that the default username and password are root / toor. 
 this process will take some minutes
